The early episode saw Betty and Barney actually standing up to Fred on a number of occasions and that was the morale of the show that you couldn't let Fred get away with his selfishness all the time.

You could probably make a good case that it was the most "adult" cartoon show ever done and that it held more appear for adults than many live-action shows of its day.
